Istanbul push Paralympic successes in 2020 Olympics bid

The Istanbul 2020 Olympic bid committee is hoping to capitalise on the recent International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Shooting World Cup by using it in its bid to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Turkish Paralympics team had its most successful Paralympic Games ever in London last year when it won one gold, five silver and four bronze medals at the event.

"Paralympic sport is more popular and more widely available than ever before in Turkey," said Istanbul 2020 chair Hasan Arat. "Our team's record-breaking performance at London 2012 was a turning point and now we are determined to maintain that momentum by bringing the Paralympic Games to Turkey."

Bringing the games to Istanbul would mean a predicted surge in the Turkish economy. In the case of last year's London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, revenue brought in was estimated to be around £10bn (US$15.1bn) for the British economy, with £2.1bn (US$3.19bn) coming through tourism.

Istanbul is one of three cities bidding for the 2020 games, the other two being Tokyo, Japan and Madrid, Spain.
