New look for historic Edinburgh boxing club

One of Scotland's oldest amateur boxing clubs has undergone a £250,000 facelift as part of a wider scheme funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Heritage Scotland.

Leith Victoria AAC Boxing Club - owned by the City of Edinburgh Council - has benefited from funding as part of the £9m Leith Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) as the second priority building in the area to be refurbished.

Established in 1919, the boxing club has undergone much-needed repairs work to stonework and the building's exterior, while Leith Neighbourhood Partnership also provided funding for other improvement work.

The boxing club, which is one of four priority buildings identified within the Leith Conservation Area for improvements as part of the THI, now hopes to increase membership and host important boxing events.

The council's planning convener, Jim Lowrie, said: "The Victoria Boxing Club is one of the many significant buildings which give us a glimpse into Leith's rich and diverse past. It is wonderful that many of them can be preserved, thanks to the Townscape Heritage Initiative."
