Frank Gehry and Santiago Calatrava could be the next high-profile architects to win projects for New York’s Hudson Yards mega-development, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The newspaper reports that “a person familiar with the matter” has claimed the pair will work on projects in the Western Yard – a 6.2 million sq ft area that will include several residential towers, an office complex, retail and leisure amenities and a school.

Situated between West 30th and West 33rd Streets, close to the northern end of the High Line, the development is part of Hudson Yards’ second phase and is scheduled for completion in 2025.

The joint developers, Related Cos. and Oxford Properties Group, have already commissioned the high-profile likes of Diller, Scofidio and Renfro, Rockwell Group, Kohn Pedersen Fox, Heatherwick Studio and Foster + Partners to work on the first phase of the project, scheduled for completion in 2019.

Taken as a whole, the Hudson Yards development is New York’s largest since the Rockefeller Center. When complete, the mixed-use real estate development will consist of 16 skyscrapers and a 750,000 sq ft (70,000sq m) retail centre with more than 100 restaurants, cafes, markets, a cinema and bars.

There will also be new houses a 200-room Equinox luxury hotel, 14 acres of public space and a hugely flexible retractable cultural building called The Shed. text hereHeatherwick’s honeycomb-like 150ft (46m) landmark, Vessel, will be the centrepiece of the scheme.

Calatrava is best-known in New York for the US$4bn Oculus transit hub and the ongoing reconstruction of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

Gehry, meanwhile, designed the 265m high skyscraper at 8 Spruce Street, which is the tallest residential building in the Western Hemisphere. Elsewhere in the US, he is currently working on projects including a mixed-use leisure development in Santa Monica, a centre for aspiring professional musicians in Philadelphia and a model railway museum in Massachusetts.
