A disused space within Bournemouth's 80-year-old Pavilion Theatre has been revamped and transformed into a multi-million pound dance centre for the South West.
Bournemouth Borough Council (BBC) worked with Arts Council England (ACE) and Dance South West to develop Pavilion Dance, which opened on 4 September and boasts a 200-seat theatre and backstage facilities.
The centre, which will benefit from revenue funding from BBC - on top of a capital contribution worth £3.29m - and ACE, also features two studios and access to the theatre's main 1,400-seat auditorium and ballroom.
More than 150 people are expected to be employed at Pavilion Dance in a range of disciplines, including artists, teachers and technical staff. It will host an extensive programme of dance and also provide rehearsal space.
ACE South West director Phil Gibby said: "Pavilion Dance will provide opportunities for thousands of people to enjoy dance performances and take part in activities and workshops.
"Pavilion Dance will have an impact on the local economy and contribute to regeneration in Bournemouth. Tourism, the hotel and retail sector, language schools and transport, as well as other cultural providers, higher education and schools will all benefit from this cultural facility."
Pavilion Dance executive director Kate Castle added: "In such uncertain times, this is exactly the kind of large scale imaginative development that will bring a boost to the local economy, enliven a much-loved local theatre and create a dynamic hub for new cultural activity."
